I fail at fandom at the moment. I apologise and hope to make amends, but don't expect too much too soon - RL, as good as it's been, is eating my brain!

* I love my new(ish) job. I say newish as it's the same job, but in a different location. Which means I have to learn a completely new geography and work with completely new people. Which I love, as I've said, but also requires a lot of time and energy at the moment.

* I love my new town. (See above for excuses for why this is taking up time and energy.) It also means kids are getting used to a new school (or they were before summer holidays), are making new friends and are wanting to go everywhere of interest in the NW, which means (see above).

* We've found a great house we want to buy. It's large, full of character and 218 years old, which means extensive and expensive surveys and delay, delay, delay. I'm on the phone almost every day arranging things to do with the purchase. BUT, when it's ours, it will be brilliant, because it's going to be a great place for having friends over. Wo0T! And family. Wo0T? Which yes, means we may be hosting the family Christmas, which is going to (see above blah, blah, blah).

* My health is getting better and better. I've been slowly fixing all the fiddly things that needed fixing but that got put on hold during the cardiac woes (teeth, primarily), BUT as the nearest NHS dentist is 10 miles away and the kids need to go there too (see above, yadda yadda yadda). Although, I'm not sure why I even bothered with an NHS dentist. Even with NHS rates, what I've needed has been so expensive, I've probably paid the difference in petrol.

Anyway, what this boils down to is that I won't be A) doing any holiday exchange fests this year and B) not attending the HP Meet-Up. *sadface*

What I will be doing is spending a week in Edinburgh during August if anyone wants to get together then, and also signing up for [livejournal.com profile] hd_remix (if it's happening and there's oodles of writing time) and [livejournal.com profile] hds_beltane. If I can manage it, I might give [livejournal.com profile] mini_fest a go, if that's running, but I can't promise anything.

I'll pop up shortly to say happy birthday to July (belatedly) and August flisties as soon as I can sort out where to find all the birthdays - I thought even though the homepage changed, there was still a list somewhere. Help?

MISS YOU ALL! MISS FANDOM.

I'LL BE BACK.

Ack - sorry late reply is late!

You and I share the GK fandom, mostly, I think. Although we like different ships.

I mostly read HP and True Blood, but also like the Avengers stuff, depending on ships - mostly Tony/Steve, Thor/Steve and Thorki.

Oh, no worries at all! Sometimes real life has to take precedence over internet time, I know. :)

Ah, okay. I mean, I ask because—who knows?—you could have gotten into a new fandom lately. (I've fallen headfirst into Inception, much to my own surprise.)

Gosh, I haven't read HP in years, but every so often I'll get hit with a burst of nostalgia, and just wallow in old loved stories. Such fun.

I loved Inception, but alas, the "main" ship sailed without me. I much prefer Cobb/Saito. Yes, yes, I know, probably squicked you. It does everyone else...

Actually, if you want to get technical, it's Saito/Cobb.

Yeah, it never did get me. The "they were hardly on screen together" argument hardly works, in this scenario, given that I ship Arthur/Eames, but—still, that's what I feel like saying! Then again, one of the things I love about fans is our creativity; if someone can make me buy Cobb/Saito I'm all for it.

Wait, why is it Saito/Cobb? What piece of fandom etiquette am I missing, here?

There's a school of thought that whoever is on THIS/ side of the slash line is the top.

Personally, I never bought into that as I'm all about switching in every slash pairing I read/write. I don't go for the whole (top/bottom thing). In yaoi it's called "reversible". Love that.

Yeah, exactly, that's why I was confused. I think I came into slash fandom just late enough to miss that trend, if trend you could call it—or perhaps never was in a fandom where this held sway. I just figure—I've seen enough examples of sexuality being complicated and messy and confusing that that kind of "rule" seems puzzling to me. Like, remember the days of WNGWJLEO ("we're not gay, we just love each other") stories? Dira and I were talking about that a few weeks ago; there was such a backlash against stories like that after a while, the gist being that they were homophobic, if I recall. But I've known people for whom that exact dynamic holds true in their marriage—they were straight before meeting their same-sex partner, and in all probability might be straight should they ever marry again, but at this point in their life they are gay. So that kind of fannish putting-people-into-boxes always confuses me.

/tl;dr, sorry!

I'm not fussed what other people are too fussed over, I just read fic because it makes me feel all steamy. I've never been a big romance fan and I'm more about the sex. I love first time fics particularly and not as concerned about the motives for why they're together. I don't like infidelity fic, but as long as that's not involved, anything goes.

I love "hate-you-but-can't-keep-my-hands-off-you" Harry Potter H/D fic, but don't like established relationship fic (unless they're constantly bickering). However, I love established relationship True Blood G/E fic, and don't like to see them fighting each other that much - probably THE ONLY couple I currently read that I care about the romance. In GenKill and Inception, I like "Don't-completely-understand-why/what-we're-doing-but-it-feels-good-and-I-fancy-you" fic.

And in all cases, I love switching :)

Ohhhh gosh, the "hate-you-but-can't-keep-my-hands-off-you" Harry Potter H/D fic. How I love that! I do pretty much always want happy endings, but hey, that's possible, right? At least in the without-epilogue camp. (I confess to not having finished reading the series...)

There's so much amazing stuff out there. I'm consistently stunned by how—even if a fic doesn't do it for me—it does it for someone. Look at us, fulfilling our own kinks via writing and reading!

Oh yes, happy endings are usually a must for me, although occasionally, I do want it vague (I can see my GK OTP ending that way) or even unhappy (most of my TB OTP fics end that way, because that's what happened in canon).

I agree, there's usually SOMEONE who likes the same, but then I always run the risk of OOCness or a squick that also gets thrown. For instance, often in H/D fics that get me going, Draco ends up too feminine or too sex!god for my taste. And there's also a risk of my True Blood OTP being too D/s-y or just too OOC with everyone else they encounter. Oh well, that's when we have to write it themselves OURSELVES, even!

Gah! Trying to do too many things at one this afternoon!
