This week started out badly and seems to be getting worse.

Sorry for the obtuse recent post, but I was in a hurry and upset. I don't know if Laure updated everyone, but if not, here it is (kinda):

On Saturday afternoon one of the planes based here at Kinloss blew up in Afghanistan. The word is that it wasn't shot down; that it was a fault in the plane (there was a fire), but they're still not sure what caused it. These planes are used primarily for search and rescue and recon, and they don't carry many weapons.

This base lost 12 men, which in this little place is a lot. (It's a lot anywhere.) Laure will tell you that this base is not big, everyone knows everyone so this was really terrible for all of us. Everyone here knows that this can happen, this is the military after all, but it was such a shock. And made even more eerie that the last Nimrod that crashed killing the crew was 11 years ago to the day. (That was at an air show in Toronto and was pilot error.)

I have four kids at my school who lost their dads, which makes work really weird right now.

The media were all over this place for three days. The entrance of the base is now covered in flowers.

And of course, my phone/Internet stopped working the day after this all happened. It's now finally up and running.

And then my mum rings to tell me my grandmother is in hospital.

And my period seems to be lasting forever. TMI?

Some good news though- I have downloaded Skype and have a headset, so anyone that fancies a FREE chit-chat, just download the freeware and tell me when you'll be on line.

Please feel free to cheer me up.

*hugs*

What is Skype?

I don't know if I can cheer you up, but I have been reading our old HSU fics over the last few days. They've made me laugh a bit. This is from No Miracles Happened Here:

Later that night, in the master bedroom-

"Sam, I'm sure there's something very strange going on with Darry and that crowd at the University."

"Esther, it's late. Please turn out the lights and come to bed."

"I mean, don't you think it's odd how Mr Pelham and Dorotea dress?"

"Esther, when was the last time you were at the Mall? Have you seen how young people dress these days?"

"And come to think of it, I never did get to the bottom of WHY the best man at Darry's wedding was dressed like he was."

"Sandy seemed to appreciate it. Sort of like a walking history lesson."

"Swaggering history lesson, more like." Apparently Sandy wasn't the only one who appreciated Max's charms.

"Probably one of those damn Freemason costumes."

"Sam, the last thing I needed reminding of was how our daughter married some goy foreigner."

"Esther, we're Reform. Think Reform. It not like she's cavorting with some xenophobic evil dictator."

I was just reading some of those a few months ago and thinking about us and laughing my head off!

Thanks for reminding me.

BTW, what do you want for your birthday????

Skype is like Messenger, but you can talk as well as chat via keyboard so long as you have a headset. It's like a free phone call via computer.

We were very, very funny. And I'm still modest too.

You do not need to get me anything for my birthday as I've been horrible about sending pressies. If there is anything you're needing from the US though, just let me know!

I think I have a headset around here somewhere. *glances at the clutter* I'll look for it and dl the program.

Sorry you're having such a rough time of it there. I hadn't heard about the accident, but feel free to purple lightning as many of the press corps as necessary in order to bring some peace back into your daily round!

If my husband ever springs for DSL, I'll be sure to download Skype. (But don't hold your breath; he's still pirating the neighbor's wireless signal for his laptop after all!)

I'd not heard a thing of the accident this past weekend, and I know being a military town here, it made even the local news. Such sad news and then on top of that, I'm sure the press didn't make things any easier for the families and everyone else.

Bad news just seems to come in bunches, don't it?

Hope your grandmother gets well very quickly!!

You take care, give the kids a hug, do something dorky...and chin up and muddle through as best you can.

And when you get a chance, we need more bandages and peroxide outside the clinic door. Do you have any idea how rough it is going to your padawan's vet clinic to get patched up and then offered a doggy biscuit if you do well?? Sheesh.
