Sometimes I love my job.

I got a call at home this morning just as I was leaving. It was the school saying that one of the mum's of a 3rd Year who had lost his dad in the air crash was trying to get a hold of me.

She wanted him to come in for his diphtheria/tetanus/polio jab today. I had to hotfoot it to the Health Centre and pick up some vaccine (I'm not giving the jabs en masse until next month, but I had told the Guidance teachers of the two 3rd years that I'd give them their jabs whenever they wanted. I figured they might be down south or had other arrangements for that day.) So, I rang her and tried to sound cheery and told her to come in with him whenever it suited.

I had everything laid out and I went to collect them when they arrived. I'd met the student last year, but couldn't remember him. Doug knows him from the Scout troup, too. I'd never met his mum, and wasn't sure what state she'd be in. (Yesterday was the "repatriation" when the bodies in their flag-covered coffins were brought back. The Queen's husband was here (again) as well as the Secretary of Defence.)

Anyway, it turned out that this student had thought that the jabs were being given today and I said no, but I'd happily give him his. So, I get into "nurse" mode and discover that I'd run out of the right sized needles I needed and the vaccine didn't have one with it. I apolgise perfusely and then organise to give him the jab on Friday (the day he comes back to school).

And then we all three just sat and talked for 45 minutes. His mum and I know a lot of the same people -everyone here knows everyone anyway, and my good friend Joanne is married to a pilot in the same squadron as this woman's husband was in.

I asked her how she was doing and if she needed any medical advice re: sleeping/eating whilst grieving. We got on really well and the whole thing ended with me giving her my work number and home number and telling her to ring whenever she wanted/needed to.

Later today I ran into this chap's Guidance teacher who thought it was great that we connected. She was going round to his house this afternoon and said she would sing my praises and encourage this lady to ring me even just for a chat.

I hope she does. Isn't life a funny ole thing?
