Icon meme

[livejournal.com profile] lijahlover made me do it...

I'll be brief.
1. Reply to this post and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

My True Blood OTP, Eric and Godric ♥ This is detail from a gorgeous piece of art by [livejournal.com profile] galidor. I love switching with every one of my OTPs, and this icon demonstrates that nicely I think, depending on how I'm imagining them.

This, of course, is Monty Python. It was the perfect icon to use when I was unwell in 2012, especially when the docs were trying to figure out what was wrong with me. (After my diagnosis, I switched to heart-themed icons instead). This is pretty much how I felt most of the time. I usually now just use this icon during Wimbledon.

I do this a lot. Even more since getting a Tumblr account. *wishes Trek would come back to LJ...*

Ah, the TIE icon by [livejournal.com profile] wicked_visions. I don't know many H/D fans who haven't seen this. The action just sums up their relationship (although sometimes in my head it's reversed), and since I am huge fan of Hogwarts Era fic, this is tres appropriate.

This is the truest statement about me in the history of true statements. I live for fic. Whether it's writing it, or (more often) reading it, discovering new fic or reading old favourites makes me squee harder than anything. Also, I do like treacle tart (Waitrose makes the best) and as Harry Potter shares the same love, it's all the better.

Okay, so not so brief. Sorry.

Tomorrow I'm off to London for a few bottles of lunch and a couple nice reunions.

IF I can be trusted with my phone (I've already sent messages to two random people this morning in a vain attempt to wish [livejournal.com profile] legolaslover77 a happy birthday - hope they like True Blood), I'll tweet/text some updates, and try very hard to make them topical and not just a continuation of my rant about ID fic, which I'm just now finding time to catch up on.

Not promising anything.

What's everyone else up to?

Right, first the stuff that can't be cut!

Once again, I was unable to write for [livejournal.com profile] hd_smoochfest (I need to have a word with the mods to try to get them to work better around my schedule) but I DID manage to throw down a prompt. And that prompt was picked up and masterfully filled with the funniest, awkward bonded-to-the-bum-and-then-have-tea-with-the-future-in-laws fic imaginable. I urge you all to stick yourself firmly to The Dangers of Faulty Handwriting and then squee all over it.

In addition - these super-sweet flisties all have birthdays this month and I'm sorry this mention is a bit delayed.

[livejournal.com profile] phoenix_on_ice (my future wife), [livejournal.com profile] disapparater, [livejournal.com profile] kiraohara, [livejournal.com profile] the_flic, [livejournal.com profile] winter_june, [livejournal.com profile] autumn_veela, [livejournal.com profile] suelink, [livejournal.com profile] geminai5, [livejournal.com profile] jelly_baby23, [livejournal.com profile] fr333bird, [livejournal.com profile] enchanted_jae, [livejournal.com profile] adelev, [livejournal.com profile] infernallysly, [livejournal.com profile] mizorekibishi, [livejournal.com profile] moon_foot, [livejournal.com profile] crystalp734, [livejournal.com profile] becoming_wen, [livejournal.com profile] lilyevans102, [livejournal.com profile] otakuwench, [livejournal.com profile] angelpoppet, [livejournal.com profile] goldylost, [livejournal.com profile] tray_la_la, [livejournal.com profile] moonlitdark, [livejournal.com profile] lttlelola, [livejournal.com profile] lea_anberlyn

Please enjoy these choccies and have a wonderful day!

And speaking of birthdays, this is for everyone!
THANK YOU

I'm trying to thank everyone individually who sent lovely stuff and birthday wishes, so if you've not heard from me yet, you should by the end of the weekend. If you don't, please hit me with a very large wad of money stick, and I'll be sure to be in touch.

Also, as many of you already know, I've had to give up co-modding [livejournal.com profile] crack_broom as my RL gets busier, and I'm very sorry to have to step down. I want to say a HUGE thank you to [livejournal.com profile] cassie_black12 and [livejournal.com profile] lore for being the best damn co-mods ever and all the reccers who have helped make the Broom a great place for great fandom goodies. And welcome to new mods [livejournal.com profile] scarletladyy and [livejournal.com profile] wwmrsweasleydo!

This is the boring RL move update )

That's all from me for now. I'm still here and am keeping up, back to posting the [livejournal.com profile] hd_prophet, but just being a bit quiet these days. I know! Colour me surprised!

(TB friends, I'm sure you'll be hearing from me after the 16th:)

Hey all my Trubie friends: [livejournal.com profile] godriceric is running a Flashback Challenge! If you've got a favourite era/scene you'd like to see or share, or both, get over there quick and tell everyone about it!

Also, our new Masterlist of Fanworks is now up, and there's plenty more where that came from on the comm.

Well, that's made my night. (I knew he was a fellow Kansan, but W0oT!)

Hmmm, no Newlin icons - this is the closest I could get.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, [livejournal.com profile] sati_lotus!

I spent the whole evening thinking about you and what you might like for your birthday.

And so I got you

Er...upon considerable reflection, I realised I hadn't been thinking about you at all. Sorry.

Finally, I was able to vaguely remember you and came up with

I'm sure that's more like it.

Whovever you are, and whatever you want, I hope you have(had) a fantastic day!

I love you loads, girlfriend.

Title: Lesson in Love
Fandom/Pairings: True Blood, Godric/Eric
Rating: R
Word Count: 2500
Warnings: Not if you just read this, then stick you head in the sand :) Actually, there’s some blood and dead people. Hello, vampire fic.
Summary: First-time fic. Fluffy smut. Prequel to Feels Like I’ve Always Known You, kinda. Although it probably helps to read that one first.
Author’s Notes: Written as a gift for [livejournal.com profile] jelly_baby23, who’s shared so much with me in this fandom, I can’t begin to thank her enough. Thank you, too, to [livejournal.com profile] delphipsmith who leapt head-first into this fandom and came up with some great suggestions. Thanks also to [livejournal.com profile] sati_lotus for the new box of crayons.
Disclaimer: Hooker, please – I don’t have anything to do with these guys.

Lesson in Love )
nursedarry: (Porn)

I'll preface this post by saying I just had to share the grateful-gleeful-embarrassed feeling I got tonight as I opened my latest PWP ficlet, recently returned from my beta. Her comments were particularly funny and fresh, as this poor girl doesn't know anything about the fandom (except perhaps the contents of the 5-minute video snippet I forced on her. She's lucky I sent her that bit - the beginning, as it were, rather than the end - but we're not going to talk about that.).

I love my betas. I have several, plus all those lovely random people I co-erce into reading and commenting on stuff before it gets posted (I'm looking at you, [livejournal.com profile] treacle_tartlet, [livejournal.com profile] nicevenn, [livejournal.com profile] noeon and [livejournal.com profile] sati_lotus). They know what I'm trying to say, rather than what I am saying, usually badly. Let's face it, unless there's an anvil falling on someone's head, I'm not a very convincing fic writer. I can and do like to make people laugh and I enjoy writing fanfic, so I'll keep on doing it. And thanks to my betas, I'll keep inflicting it on you.

Now as I find myself drawn into other fandoms where I want to explore greater romantic or darker themes, I need my betas more than ever. That's not to say I couldn't write those things in HP - I have done - but I preferred my cracky comfort zone, which I'm finding doesn't sit so well in the Iraqi desert or Bon Temps, Louisiana. Maybe it never sat well in HP, either, but I enjoyed reading it as much as writing it, so I reckon there's a place for any genre everywhere, just in differing amounts.

Smut is even more difficult for someone who writes for the Department of Health for a living, or at least, this someone. In my Day Job, not only do I usually write in the passive voice, I often use proper scientific lingo and big words, with simple themes and very little description. This does not ordinarily make for good smut. And never romance: my initial drafts typically sound like Planned Parenthood-meets-Mills & Boon. I pick up something by [livejournal.com profile] oldenuf2nb or [livejournal.com profile] septemberoses or [livejournal.com profile] cjmarlowe and turn green with envy at how effortlessly I find myself happily sandwiched in-between their characters mid-coitus, their narratives brimming with emotion without sounding clinical or clichéd.

I cannot stress how much I value my betas' instructions in this. Tonight, [livejournal.com profile] delphipsmith's learned advice and hysterical comments had me feeling so good about the writing experience (as well making me giggle over how she can shoe-horn Lucius Malfoy into anything), I felt compelled to say THANK YOU to her and to [livejournal.com profile] cassie_black12, and especially [livejournal.com profile] groolover for their years of difficult service to me as betas, and more importantly, as friends.

Please excuse the grammatical errors in this post. I'm sure it also could have been sexier.

Title: Feels Like I’ve Always Known You
Fandom/Pairings: True Blood, Godric/Eric
Rating: NC17, just
Word Count: ~4K
Warnings: Not really, aside from the big stupid obvious one most G/E readers are familiar with.
Summary: So, in my head – at least for the purposes of this story – everyone leaves the church and goes to do…whatever, and the next scene is the following night (‘cause who the hell can organise a party that quickly?). Which leaves the remainder of the night Eric gets Godric back completely free. Mmmmm... Angsty smut.
Author's Notes: Written for my darling friend [livejournal.com profile] sati_lotus, who helped keep me smiling through a hard year. I'm sorry this has taken so long to write. I know this is your favourite kind of fic, but for a cracky fluff writer, it ain't easy - which will be painfully obvious as you read this. Special thanks also to my G/E friends and writers who have made me so very happy in this fandom. And cheers x1000 to the truly wonderful [livejournal.com profile] groolover for the beta! Title taken from On A Night Like This, by Kylie Minogue.
Disclaimer: Not mine. So very not mine :(

First of all, huge apologies to everyone I didn't get around to sending pumpkins to - the wifi where I was staying over Hallowe'en was a bit dodgy and I managed to get out a few, but not nearly enough. Hopefully, I'll be somewhere more convenient next time. Thanks muchly to [livejournal.com profile] winter_june, [livejournal.com profile] dracones, [livejournal.com profile] ldydark1, [livejournal.com profile] sassy_cissa, [livejournal.com profile] nicevenn, [livejournal.com profile] sophia_clark, [livejournal.com profile] knowmefirst for my yummy noms.

Flu season and RL work continue to eat my brain, but thanks to you all, I'm still smiling. Here's a little something [livejournal.com profile] sati_lotus sent me to make me laugh and it worked. (Naturally, I'm all for the suggestions at the bottom where the number three would be on a normal dart board. Aside from another explosion - there's been at least one too many of those as it is.)

Those of you who know me will know I have a thing for Allan Hyde. (Yeah, all right, shut up.)

Well, a few weeks ago, thanks to the wonderful staff at AllanHyde.com and the organisers of the Vampire Ball, the video-tastic [livejournal.com profile] jelly_baby23 and I got a chance to meet and interview him.

Clearly, I'm no pro: it's unlikely Mike Wallace ever asked about a favourite porridge recipe (luckily for you that's been edited from this version), and it's doubtful Kate Adie ever gazed into anyone’s eyes in order to see if all the fanfic authors got the colour right. (They did.) Thankfully, I also had some legitimate questions given to me to ask him.

So, here's the gorgeous Godric and my stupid transatlantic accent.

Note: spoilers for True Blood, Season 5

Okay, let's cross-post this ONE MORE TIME (sorry G/E friends:)

Title: Delay Is the Deadliest Form of Denial (hosted on AO3)
Authors: [livejournal.com profile] sati_lotus and [livejournal.com profile] nursedarry
Artists: [livejournal.com profile] naturegirlrocks, banner by [livejournal.com profile] joan_waterhouse
Fandom: True Blood
Word Count: ~16K
Rating: PG13
Characters/Pairings: Godric/Eric, Pam, Bill, Ginger, Sookie, Isabel
Warnings: Discussion of main character (true) death. And no smut. WTF?
Summary: You can only lie to yourself for so many centuries.
Disclaimer: These characters belong to Charlaine Harris, Alan Ball & HBO, and not us :(
Notes: This is set between Seasons 4 and 5, though sadly, Season 5 has made the story woefully AU (contains no spoilers for S5). Enormous bloody kisses to our artists [livejournal.com profile] naturegirlrocks and [livejournal.com profile] joan_waterhouse, and to our beta and proof-readers. Thanks also to the fabulous Allan Hyde & Alexander Skarsgard for inspiring us. Title taken from a quote by C. Northcote Parkinson.

I'm sorry this is so late, but here's a big THANK YOU to [livejournal.com profile] sra_danvers, [livejournal.com profile] capitu, [livejournal.com profile] knowmefirst, and [livejournal.com profile] invidious for the groovy pencils, and [livejournal.com profile] sassy_cissa, [livejournal.com profile] goldylost, [livejournal.com profile] knowmefirst, [livejournal.com profile] ldydark1, [livejournal.com profile] joan_waterhouse, [livejournal.com profile] nenne, [livejournal.com profile] kayladie for the adorable pandas!

I'm shattered; work is crazy with flu season starting next week and the NHS restructuring is landing on my desk soon. Also, my referral to the gym for Phase IV of cardiac rehab came through, and I am spending all my free time (!) there. I actually cried when I got on the cross-trainer. IKR, WTF? But I was just so delighted to get back to the gym after nearly a year.

Anyway, I'm taking a break this weekend and going to this for absolutely no reason. *cough*

I'VE BEEN SMOOCHED!

How about 40K of funny feel-good, shower-dripping H/D with a side of nascent AS/S?

Come on! You know you want to!

Like Heaven to Touch
Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] groolover!

In other news, I wonder what else could be on the horizon...
Or something. Probably not the best choice of words.

Hello everyone! Yes, some of this barely-controlled joy is pharmaceutically derived, but it's also the result of sleeping well, eating well AND FINALLY HAVING THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF CIRCULATING OXYGEN IN MY BODY.

I came home from hospital yesterday. It is very weird to think that exactly this time last week, I was on an operating table with a bunch of people's hands in my chest. I have an enormous scar now, but at least my heart is working like it should be! A good trade, I think. Evidently, it wasn't pretty: my heart had become "grossly enlarged" and my pulmonary veins were more of a mess than the angiogram and MRI had indicated. The surgeon fixing them was able to re-route them all to the left atrium. I had my mitral valve repaired (annuloplasty), with the aid of some Gore-tex sutures to replace a couple chordae tendineae and a synthetic ring (for which the other surgeon gave me the serial number - in case of recall, I guess - EEEK!) There's a chance that I'll eventually need the valve replaced, but not any time in the near future. They also performed a pulmonary vein ablation procedure to control my atrial fibrillation.

The following people should be sainted for acting above and beyond the call of duty with their visits, gifts and hand-holding whilst I was being jabbed and lines and drains were being yanked out of me: [livejournal.com profile] meredyth_13, [livejournal.com profile] accioscar, [livejournal.com profile] mayfly_78 and [livejournal.com profile] felidaeryl. [livejournal.com profile] sati_lotus kept me laughing and I even got a nice tweet from my favourite True Blood vampire - THANK YOU, ALLAN!

Huge thanks also goes to [livejournal.com profile] alovelycupoftea, [livejournal.com profile] vaysh11, [livejournal.com profile] groolover and [livejournal.com profile] dysonrules for finishing up [livejournal.com profile] hd_remix. I owe you my mod life, ladies!

Finally, THANK YOU TO EVERYONE HERE for your lovely messages, vgifts, e-cards, emails, healing thoughts, and well-wishes. I could NOT have got through this as easily as I did without my internet friends, and I thank god for all of you.

I'm still going to be lying low on LJ for awhile whilst healing and getting back fully into RL, but it should be back to business as usual in the virtual world in the next few months.
